When our family first set out to explore the hiking trails at Muskegon State Park, we didn’t realize how much variety we’d find—from peaceful boardwalk strolls around wetlands to sandy climbs up towering dunes with breathtaking lake views. Hiking here isn’t just about getting from point A to point B—it’s about discovery.
Stairs to Beach at Muskegon State Park
Our kids loved spotting frogs along the Lost Lake Trail, racing up the dunes, and winding through shady forest paths. And the best part? Muskegon makes outdoor adventure welcoming for everyone—there’s even an accessible trail and a track chair available at the Muskegon Luge Park, so all visitors can enjoy the outdoors. If you’re planning a trip, I can’t recommend enough combining these hikes with a full visit to the park. You’ll find even more adventures in my guide to 12 Things to Do at Muskegon State Park and our detailed Muskegon State Park Camping Guide.

1. Dune Ridge Trail
Length: ~1.25 miles (loop)
Difficulty: Moderate (some dune climbing)
Why We Love It: This is hands-down the most scenic trail in the park. You’ll hike along the top of coastal dunes with breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake. It’s not long, but the elevation can be a bit challenging—totally worth it.
Tip: Go near sunset for amazing photo ops!
2. Lost Lake Trail
Length: ~1.5 miles (loop)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Why We Love It: A peaceful, wooded trail around a quiet inland lake. Great for spotting wildlife like frogs, herons, and turtles. It’s shady, calm, and kid-friendly, though there are some boardwalks and steps.
Tip: Bring bug spray—it’s a little marshy in spots.
**The Accessible Trail is not on the main trail map. From the campground it starts/ends at the Michigan Sport Complex and it leads all the way to Lost Lake Boardwalk. This ADA compliant trail made of crushed concrete will take you past the yurt and zipline and through wooded areas. These trails are lighted for cross country skiing in the winter.
3. Devil’s Kitchen Trail
Length: ~0.4 miles (one way)
Difficulty: Easy
Why We Love It: Short but interesting! This trail leads to a unique rock formation and scenic overlook. It’s great for little legs or a quick nature walk from the campground.
Tip: Combine it with parts of the Dune Ridge Trail for a longer hike.

4. Hearty Hiker Trail
Length: ~2 miles (loop)
Difficulty: Moderate
Why We Love It: A nice mix of terrain with forest, dunes, and open areas. Less crowded, so it feels like a hidden gem. It connects to other trails, so you can customize your route.
Tip: Good for trail runners and older kids.
Paved 1 Mile Channel Walk Trail
5. Channel Walk Trail
Length: ~1 mile (one way)
Difficulty: Easy, paved
Why We Love It: Not a forest trail, but a must-do! This flat path runs along the Muskegon Channel with views of boats, the lighthouse, and even freighters. Perfect for strollers, wheelchairs, and casual walkers.
Tip: Great place to catch a sunset or fish off the pier.
