Muskegon State Park offers endless activities from scenic hikes, sunsets on Lake Michigan to thrilling ziplines and toboggan runs. No matter the season there is plenty to keep your children entertained while visiting or camping at Muskegon State Park. If you’re planning a family getaway to the Lake Michigan shoreline, Muskegon State Park is one of those spots that checks all the boxes—beautiful beaches, towering dunes, and endless ways for kids to burn energy outdoors.
On our recent trip to Muskegon, we found so many kid-approved activities both inside the state park and just a short drive away. From sandy beach days and hiking trails to ice cream stops and unique local attractions, this corner of Michigan is full of family fun. Here are 12 kid-friendly things to do at Muskegon State Park—or close by—that your crew will love.
Activities at Muskegon State Park
1. Explore the Trails
Lost Lake Trail – Wooden boardwalks, frogs, and turtles make it feel like a nature adventure.
Dune Ridge Trail – Short but scenic with fun dune climbs and lake views. Make it longer by connecting with other trails.
Channel Walk – Easy and stroller-friendly; watch boats and wave to fishermen!

2. Fish & Picnic at Snug Harbor
Wide grassy areas, picnic tables, and plenty of birds and turtles to watch.
Great for a mid-day break from the beach or trails.
Snug Harbor is ideal for kids — calm waters, docks, and easy shoreline access.
Lost Lake is a another fun, quiet spot for catching panfish.
Bring a kids’ pole and worms, and you’re all set!
3. Lake Michigan Campground Playground
A few small swings for the kids to play on in the campground loop.
Great for letting kids run around while parents prep dinner or relax at camp.

4. Beach Days
Shallow water and soft sand make Lake Michigan perfect for sandcastles and wading.
Muskegon Lake also offers calmer water, which is great for younger kids or floaties.

7. Camp Overnight
Surround yourself with nature by camping at Muskegon State Park. With 2 campground loops, featuring electric hookup, fire pits, picnic tables and modern restrooms. Make memories together with your family sitting around a campfire this summer. Muskegon State Park also has a yurt you can reserve at Michigan State Park Department of Natural Resources.

8. Climb inside the Block House
The Blockhouse at Muskegon State Park is a historic two-story wooden structure sitting atop the highest dune in Muskegon County. Originally built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and rebuilt in the 1960s after a fire, it stands as both a scenic overlook and a monument to the park's rich history. Today, visitors can hike up the hill to enjoy the panoramic landscape. After exploring the interior we then hiked on the nearby trail system.

9. Ruth Anne’s Ice cream
A trail leads from the back of the Lake Michigan Loop Campground ( right behind our site ) This classic West Michigan ice cream stand has generous portions, tons of soft serve flavors, sundaes & flurries. Their bright outdoor seating is fun, beachy vibe—perfect after a day on the water. A bit pricey, but unmissable spot. TIP Try the Creamsicle! It’s delicious.

10. Crafts and Hot Chocolate or Coffee with the Campground Host
When you first arrive, ride your bikes to the host site and see what fun activities they offer. With a little book library, candy bingo, nature crafts and hot chocolate & coffee with donuts, it’s an ideal way to get connected.

USS Silverside Museum
11. USS Silversides Submarine Museum
Located about 15 minutes away, this WWII sub and naval museum is super interactive.
Kids can climb inside the submarine and learn about life on board.
Best for ages 6+, though younger kids will still love exploring.
12. Michigan’s Adventure Amusement & Water Park
~Only 25 minutes away
The Amusement park offers rides for all ages including roller coasters and kiddy rides.
