What to Expect at Mount Rushmore With Kids

The first thing to know is that Mount Rushmore is very walkable and family-friendly. It is not a huge theme-park-style attraction with rides or long activities, but it is absolutely worth visiting. We recommend planning to attend the lighting ceremony at night with a patriotic video.

Kid-Friendly Things To Do at Mount Rushmore

1. Walk the Presidential Trail

This is the best way to experience Mount Rushmore. The trail has Loops below the monument, offers closer views and includes educational signs and has stairs and overlooks. Walk it clockwise direction so it’s generally downhill.

Length: About 0.6 miles

Tip: There are quite a few stairs (422 to be exact), so plan accordingly if using a stroller.

2. Complete the Junior Ranger Program

Kids can pick up a free Junior Ranger booklet at the visitor center. This can keep kids engaged while learning about the monument and history.

3. Visit the Sculptor’s Studio & Lincoln Boglum Visitor Center

This small stop gives kids a better understanding of how Mount Rushmore was created.

4. Stay for the Evening Lighting Ceremony

If your kids can stay up later, this is a memorable experience. The monument is illuminated after sunset and there is a short patriotic program. Generally it takes 45 minutes and illuminates the faces of the presidents.

• Patience for exiting traffic afterward

5. Enjoy a Scoop of TJ’s Ice Cream
