Trail Start – Suspension Bridge Over Sugar Creek
Your journey begins at the famous suspension bridge, a must-stop for photos and a bit of adrenaline to kick off your hike. The bridge offers a beautiful view of Sugar Creek and sets the tone for the rugged terrain ahead. Children will especially love the thrill!

Into the Ravines – Rocky Streambeds & Cliffs
After the bridge, you'll quickly descend into a shaded canyon, following the bed of a rocky stream. This section feels like stepping into another world—towering rock walls, mossy ledges, and the sound of trickling water all around. Expect to get your feet wet here, especially in spring or after rain. I highly advise wearing hiking sandals- our personal favorites Keens and Chacos.

Punch Bowl – Nature’s Rock Sculpture
One of the most unique formations on Trail 3 is the Punch Bowl, a deep, water-carved sandstone pothole tucked into the canyon. It’s a favorite photo stop and a great place to pause and appreciate the power of erosion over time.

The Ladders – Iconic and Adventurous
Perhaps the most exhilarating feature of Trail 3 is the series of wooden ladders that climb straight up the narrow rock walls. These can be slick when wet and a bit intimidating for those afraid of heights, but they’re safe and sturdy. Kids love this part, and it’s a rite of passage for Turkey Run visitors.
Narrow Canyons and Slot Passages
Past the ladders, the trail winds through narrow canyon walls that are just wide enough for a single hiker to pass. These slot-like passages are shaded and cool, with ferns and lichen growing from the walls. They feel like nature’s own secret corridors.

Creek Crossings and Natural Rock Stairs
You’ll continue to hop across small creeks, ascend natural rock “staircases,” and navigate uneven terrain. This ever-changing landscape keeps the hike exciting and visually rich. Trail 3 never gets boring!
Connecting Trails and Loops
Trail 3 can loop with Trails 5 and 10 for a longer hike or be done as an out-and-back. Be sure to stop by the Nature Center before starting to check for any closures, especially after heavy rain. Trail 3 often has high water areas that can become impassable.
Wedge Rock
Good reception with both Verizon and AT&T throughout the park.
Dogs are allowed on all trails at Turkey Run State Park. Although Trail 3 has multiple ladder climbs, which can be difficult. We brought our small/midsize dog on every hike, including Trail 3, but utilized a vest harness with handle to assist our dog up the ladders.
