1. Start with a Ground Tarp or Blanket

Keep little feet dry and cozy! A round waterproof ground tarp is the perfect base layer for your igloo setup. It blocks out moisture from snow and gives kids a comfy spot to sit or play. You can even add a soft blanket or foam play mat on top for extra warmth if it’s dry outside.

Tip: Choose one that matches the size of your dome (usually 10–12 ft.) and has tie-down loops for easy setup.

2. Create a Dome Cover

The real magic happens when you add a climbing dome cover. Not only does it create that cozy igloo look, but it also blocks wind and keeps snow from falling inside. You can buy one made specifically for your dome, or DIY your own with a heavy-duty tarp or outdoor fabric.

Transform your climbing dome into a winter igloo to prolong your time playing outdoors. Here are three different ideas on how to make your backyard climbing dome into a igloo for the chilly, winter days.

  1. Durable igloo dome cover -This premade tarp from Amazon is the perfect fit for a climbing dome cover.

  2. DIY Method: Purchase an Industrial strength packing stretch wrap ($20 for a huge roll). This creates a clear dome. Make sure to wrap tightly and cut out a triangle to create the entrance. One package should be enough to cover the entire dome.

  3. DIY Method XL Large Tarp: One year my kids took it upon themselves to cover our dome with an extra large tarp and stack wood for the entrance. It was nothing fancy, but they initiated the entire thing by themselves and took ownership of the entire process. Plus we can reuse the tarp for other purposes.

3. String Up Twinkle Lights or a Lantern

No igloo is complete without a little sparkle! Wrap twinkle lights to or battery-powered fairy lights around the frame of your dome or inside the cover. The soft glow makes it feel like a magical snow fort — perfect for winter evenings. Another great option is a Lantern that they can hang inside their igloo.

Safety Tip: Always use outdoor-rated, battery-powered lights to avoid cords and electrical hazards.

4. Add Cozy Touches

Once your igloo is set up, make it inviting! Add a few outdoor blankets, floor pillows, or sleeping bags, and let your kids bring out their favorite books or snacks. It’s the perfect spot for story time, pretend camping, or sipping hot cocoa together.

5. Keep the Fun Going with Accessories

Add a hammock and your favorite outdoor winter picture books for more winter fun. Turning your climbing dome into a winter igloo not only extends your outdoor play season but also gives your kids a new way to enjoy the outdoor air — even on chilly days. Whether they’re pretending to live in an Arctic camp or just hanging out under twinkling lights, this simple setup brings the magic of winter right to your backyard.

Our climbing dome has been a favorite year-round toy — from capture the flag games in summer to snow fort fun in winter.
