Driving to the Ark
The Ark is close to 1-75 which made it a great surprise spot to break up the long drive home from our Family Trip to the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee . We allotted 3-5 hours to explore the Ark Encounter, which was a decent amount of time. Staying till the park closed, we then drove 25 minutes to Home 2 Suites by Hilton, where we spent the night, swam at the pool and enjoyed pizza for dinner, before driving back the next day to Michigan.
Prepare Spirtually for the Ark Encounter
Here is a mini devotional and some ways from a Christian mama to prepare your children’s hearts and minds before visiting the ark.
Playground at the Ark Encounter
1. Beat the Crowds: Go Early or Late
We arrived on a Friday afternoon around 3 p.m. and stayed for about three hours. It wasn’t crowded at all, which made everything feel so relaxed and enjoyable. Since it’s close to I-75, it’s an easy stop if you’re road-tripping. Our kids got their energy out on the playground first—such a great way to stretch those little legs!
2. Wear Comfy Shoes (Seriously!)
We ended up walking over 3.5 miles—about 8,000 steps—in just a few hours. Trust me, comfy shoes are a must! If you’ve got young kids, bring a stroller. You’ll be glad you did.
3. Pack Snacks and Water
You’re allowed to bring your own snacks and refillable water bottles (there are drink stations inside). There are picnic tables and outdoor seating if you want to pack a lunch, but you’ll also find plenty of food options—ice cream shops, Mexican cuisine, and even a buffet at Esperanza’s.
4. Short on Time? Choose the Ark
If you’re limited on time and trying to decide between the Ark Encounter and the Creation Museum, I’d go with the Ark—especially if you have kids. It’s visually stunning and more interactive for little ones. But if you're staying in the area, there are combo discounts for both attractions.
5. Don’t Miss the Playground
Give yourself extra time for the playground. It’s one of the best we’ve visited, with so much to do for kids of all ages. There are huge play structures, tunnel slides, ziplines, a rainbow maze, seesaws, and even a special toddler area. Plus, it includes handicap-accessible swings, which I really appreciated.
6. Accessibility is a Priority
The Ark Encounter has mobility aids and motorized scooters available if needed, and those accessible swings I mentioned earlier are such a thoughtful touch for families with different needs.
7. Pack Everything You Need Before Entering
Once you leave the parking lot, it’s a bit of a trek to get back—there’s a walk and a bus ride involved. So be sure to grab your jackets, sunscreen, snacks, and anything else you’ll need for the day before heading in.
8. Bring Your Camera
There are so many unique photo opportunities, from the massive ark itself to adorable animals and colorful displays. Don’t forget to capture those memories!
9. Check Out the Pop-Up Zoo
On the second level of the ark, there’s a fun pop-up zoo experience where your kids can see and pet a variety of animals. Mine absolutely loved it!
10. Thunderstorm Simulation Warning
If your little one is afraid of storms, just a heads-up: the inside of the ark includes simulated thunderstorm sounds for ambiance. A quick explanation ahead of time can help prepare sensitive kids.
Massive Ark
11. Visit After Dark for a Magical Experience
If you’re able to stay into the evening, the ark lights up in a rainbow of colors. It’s truly magical and was one of the highlights of our visit.
12. Read the biblical account in Genesis 6-9
Refresh your memory of the biblical account and get familiar with the details in Genesis. We also found it fun and thought-provoking to watch movies like Evan Almighty and Two by Two, which sparked great conversations about the difference between what the Bible says and how people interpret or portray the story in films. As you prepare, try imagining together with your kids what life on the ark might have been like—what sounds would you hear? What smells might fill the air? What would the atmosphere be like inside the massive boat? These questions can help bring the story to life and deepen your experience.
