TONS OF INDOOR AND OUTDOOR ATTRACTIONS IN GATLINBURG

Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies

Nearby you will find Gatlinburg, Tennessee, a popular mountain town which is an ideal destination for spring break and offers something for everyone. The beauty of spring time in the mountains, combined with a plethora of outdoor activities to explore this area is a winning combination. Some exciting ways to explore include horseback riding, ziplining, hiking and tubing. With Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg so close, even if the spring weather is unpredictable there are abundant options for indoor attractions from aquariums and museums to entertaining dinner theater shows and shopping.

With so many things to do, you can’t go wrong when choosing the Great Smoky Mountains for your next vacation. It also caters to large groups of friends and families with tons of spacious cabin rentals and hotels. You’re sure to make lasting memories together. BEAUTY IN THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS

Trail to Spruce Flats Falls

Enjoy the natural beauty of the Smokies with mountains, caves, wildlife, waterfalls and glorious views. Honestly the hardest part seems to be narrowing down all the possibilities. One week is definitely not enough time to do everything, so here is a Guide to Visiting The Great Smoky Mountains for Spring Break which will help you choose where to eat, stay and play. This is our second time visiting this area and I’ll showcase some of the highlights and our favorite things to do during our stay. You’re sure to create lasting memories in Tennessee when you make this your spring break destination.

SPRING WEATHER IN THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS

Laurel Falls in the Smoky Mountains

The average weather temperatures are in the mid 60/s- 70’s in spring. Although March, April, and May weather in the Smokies can be quite unpredictable with rain showers popping up throughout the day, the advantage is that all that rain helps create gorgeous waterfalls and herald in the spring’s colorful wildflowers. Buds begin to peak from crimson crabapples, purple violets, stunning white and pink rhododendron and white mountain laurel. Luckily you will not be lacking in things to do even if the weather is fickle because there are so many indoor museums, aquariums, dinner theater shows and even caverns that can be toured in the rain.

Will it be crowded?

The Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited National Park in the US so it’s one popular spot. That being said, you’ll avoid the crowds that normally flock to beach towns during spring break. Although, the busiest season by far is during the summer, so spring is a great alternative time to visit. If you prefer to avoid crowds Townsends is the best place to stay.

Cost of National Park

The National Park Pass can be purchased at the visitor’s center for a low fee. Day pass $5.00 /Week Pass $10.00

TRAVEL ACCOMODATIONS/ NEARBY AIRPORT

A great destination for groups of friends and families

Many people from the Midwest and South find that it’s a great destination for a road trip. From Michigan it took us about 9 hours to reach The Great Smoky Mountains, this is a central spot where we met up with friends who were 4 hours away in Georgia. If you plan on staying in the Tennessee side of the park, which I recommend, the closest airport is Knoxville McGee Tyson Airport (TYS), approximately 1.5 hours from the Visitor Center entrance. This is one area that you will definitely need a car to travel around.

WHERE TO STAY IN THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS

One big question, you may be asking yourself is where should I stay? The three main areas to stay is Townsend, Gatlinburg, or Pigeon Forge. Each one offers different amenities and attractions. With so many options for accommodations you’re sure to find what your looking for; choose from large group cabins with indoor pools, to cozy cottages for families with hot tubs and even indoor hotels with waterparks. If you’re wondering which place is better to stay: Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge or Townsend, here is a quick break down of the advantages and disadvantages.

Another thing to take note of is that there are three main entrances to the Great Smoky Mountains. One in Townsends, Gatlinburg and Cherokee. If you plan to spend most of your time hiking this will affect where you want to stay. I find that a map really helps me get a feel for where I’d prefer to stay based on what adventure we’re planning for our trip. Here is a map I created on Wanderlog to help in the planning process. It includes cities, the national park entrances, hikes, indoor and outdoor attractions and restaurants

This map was made with Wanderlog, a travel planner on iOS and Android

Townsend

Desiring a more peaceful setting surrounded by nature during your visit to the Great Smoky Mountains, Townsend is an ideal smaller town feel. If you plan to spend most of your time outdoors hiking and exploring the National Park, this would be your best bet. It’s the closest town to the West of the National Park and has much less traffic. We opted to stay in Townsend for a quieter experience, much less traffic and it’s minutes from the National Park entrance. Yet it’s only 30 minutes from Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.

Little River Farmhouse provided a quiet space with an outdoor space with a hot tub

We stayed in the perfect spot at the Little River Farmhouse on 3 acres of land along the Little River. We had ample space, a large covered porch and kitchen and a lovely trail leading down to the Little River.  Did I mention it had a large relaxing hot tub too! I highly recommend booking a place with a hot tub, soaking your tired body after a long day of hiking was seriously the BEST feeling!

We really appreciated the quieter setting to relax in the evenings with a bonfire, plus there were several suspension bridges to explore right down the road and along the river.

Camping

Another great option is the Little Arrow Outdoor Resort, which has cabins, glamping and RV/ tent camping sites. Check out the availability for booking here.

Cade’s Cove Campground in the National park also has available camping and is beautiful if you want to be surrounded by nature and view wildlife.

Some of the best outdoor activities in Townsend include:

Townsends also offers some great dining options in the area. We thoroughly enjoyed the Peaceful Social District which has delicious food, a large outdoor seating area and even an outdoor nature playscape for kids.

Gatlinburg

This mountain town city has some of the best views of the Smoky Mountains and is a popular destination spot for those wanting to experience the national park, but also enjoy all the area has to offer. Gatlinburg is the closest large city to the North of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and relatively close to some hikes and attractions including Clingman’s Dome, Ober Gatlinburg skylift, Anakeesta’s lighted sky bridge, and the downtown Ripleys' Aquarium. Gatlinburg has restaurants, gift shops and attractions galore, here are just some of the many possibilities.

ATTRACTIONS IN GATLINBURG

  • Anakeesta Outdoor Adventure Park and illuminated night walk

  • Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies & Believe It or Not

  • Moonshine Distillery Tours

  • Gatlinburg Space Needle

  • Ober Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway skylift

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park Entrance

(One of the disadvantages, especially at the entrance to Gatlinburg National Park entrance is that you will deal with more traffic, especially on highway 144)

ACCOMODATIONS IN GATLINBURG

I recommend staying in Gatlinburg if you want to be centrally located to explore the National Park, but are also planning on enjoying other area attractions. It’s also a great area for large groups and families. On our first trip to the Smokies, we stayed in a spacious mountain-side cabin with a private indoor pool that could accommodate a group of 16 people’s needs. Can’t beat choosing a cabin with mountain top views and a hot tub for relaxing in the evenings. Click here to find the best places to stay in Gatlinburg. Another fun option for families who love to swim is to stay the night at the Wild Dome Indoor Water Park. Perhaps you want to stay right in the heart of Gatlinburg at Margaritaville Resort Gatlinburg in a tropical style luxury hotel with a fun Caribbean style vibe, it features hot tubs and both an indoor and outdoor pool with a waterslide.

Pigeon Forge

Pigeon Forge is only 6 minutes from Gatlinburg and offers a host of attractions. You definitely won’t be lacking for things to do. This is a great location to stay if you’re planning to visit Dollywood Amusement Park, ride the alpine coaster, or attend entertaining dinner shows that will appeal to kids of all ages.

Want a fun free activity? Relax in the rocking chairs at the Island in Pigeon Forge, which has a free water show every half hour. This is a great spot in Pigeon Forge for people watching. We often joke and call this area hillbilly Las Vegas! Here are some of the best things to do in Pigeon Forge.

ATTRACTIONS IN PIGEON FORGE

  • Dinner theaters (Dixie Stampede, Hatfield and McCoy, Pirates Voyage)

  • Paula Deen’s Lumber Jack Show & Adventure Park

  • Indoor attractions (Titanic Museum, Wonderworks and more!)

  • Dollywood Amusement Park and Dollywood’s Splash Country

  • The Island in Pigeon Forge which has free water light shows

  • Go-kart track and putt putt golf

  • Ziplining

  • Horseback riding

ACCOMODATIONS IN PIGEON FORGE
If you want a budget-friendly hotel with an indoor pool and tube slide, Grand Smokies Resort Lodge is an affordable place for the family. Planning on visiting Dollywood, treat yourself and relax at Dollywood's Dream More Resort & Spa which is only 3 miles from the amusement park’s entrance. Experience the full dose of Southern hospitality as you enjoy the spacious indoor and outdoor swimming pools, plus a spa so you can pamper yourself during your stay.

BEST THINGS TO DO NEAR THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS

Visitor’s Center

During your visit, make sure your first stop is to the visitor’s center. There are 4 different visitor’s centers to choose from in the Great Smoky Mountains including Sugarlands, Oconoluftee, and Cade’s Cove. This is a prime spot to grab day trail maps and brochures on local area attractions. Take the time to speak with the rangers, who are a wealth of information, to help choose your hikes. Originally, we had planned to hike the Porter’s Creek Trail to see the wildflowers, but learned that part of the trail was closed due to flooding in late March during our Spring Break. The knowledgeable ranger helped direct us to the Spruce Flatts Trail, which proved to be our children’s favorite hike.

Before setting out on any hike, make sure you plan ahead and are prepared. Some key essentials before you set out is a good day pack, hiking shoes, water, snacks, layered clothing, maps, and a rain jacket. Here is a detailed daypack trip list that can help you prepare for day hikes. Take note, cell reception was unreliable in the area so make sure to pick up maps and set a designated meet up spot if you’re traveling in separate vehicles.

HIKING IN THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS

With hundreds of waterfalls and miles and miles of trails to discover there is plenty to do in the Great Smoky Mountains. Here are some of our favorite ways to experience the beauty of the area through outdoor activities like hiking, sky lifts, horseback riding, tubing, underground cavern tours, and scenic drives. Also keep your eyes open for black bears, wild turkeys and deer throughout your trip.

Dogs are not allowed on any of these trails. If you want to bring your furry friend along, there are only 2 trails in the entire park and they both are located near the visitor’s center.

Cost To hike in the Smokies it’s relatively inexpensive, since it’s free to enter the national park. You only need to purchase a parking pass which is $5/ day or $10/week.

Favorite Hikes

Abram Falls (5.0 miles)

While visiting Cade’s Cove take the time to hike the 5 mile round trip trail to Abram Falls. This moderate hiking trail runs along the Abram’s River so there are tons of bridge crossings, tranquil river views and interesting features. Although it is a popular area to explore, the waterfall area has an open spacious area so it doesn’t feel crammed. Check out our Abram Fall’s video reel here

 Spruce Flats Trail (1.9miles)

Abram Falls Trail Head is located in Cade’s Cover Scenic Loop

This hidden gem is less than a 2 mile round trip hike with a beautiful waterfall at the end. Unlike the name of the trail, the Spruce Flats Trail was anything but flat. This trail is an uphill climb with a couple switch backs. If you don’t mind a little bouldering you can climb up next to this impressive waterfall. This lesser known hike is not on the main trail map so it’s less crowded and was my children’s favorite hike of all.

Laurel Falls (2.6 miles) One of the most popular waterfall hikes due to the shorter distance. It provides scenic views, including a stunning waterfall. It tends to be quite crowded, so set out early or go on the weekdays. If you are daring enough you can climb and boulder down to enjoy the river below the falls. Caution is needed as you near the falls due to steep drop offs. This trail is technically paved, but many parts are broken by tree roots, I’d recommend not bringing a stroller. Interested in additional hikes and detailed descriptions check out our Smoky Mountain Waterfall Hiking Guide for Families.

Scenic Drives

Historic buildings from the 1800’s can be visited in Cade’s Cove.

Cade’s Cove

Enter a valley surrounded by misty mountains when you visit Cade’s Cove. It’s an 11 mile trail which you can drive or bike. This scenic area is known for wildlife viewing, including black bear sightings. During our first visit in 2017, we saw multiple black bears during our drive, this time our friend spotted a black bear while parking the car along the road at the park near Laurel Falls. Keep your eyes constantly peeled during your trip. Although it’s only 11 miles, it is a popular drive so plan for additional time. If you enjoy hiking, definitely plan to hike to the gorgeous Abram Falls. Other scenic drives include Clingman’s Dome Road and Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail.

Clingman’s Dome

At a height of 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome claims the title of the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Kids will especially love to brag that they climbed to the summit of the highest point in the park. The hike is only half a mile but the incline is steep and the air is thinner due to the elevation change, so resting is usually required. Thankfully, benches are located along the trail and the amazing view is quite the reward. Make sure to bring snacks and water.

Dollywood

Wild Eagle rollercoaster at Dollywood

Thrilling rollercoasters rides, entertaining shows, musical performances, delicious food and memories await you at Dollywood! This amusement park is great for the whole family. My family of 6 loved every minute of our time in Dollywood. They also have special festivals occurring throughout the year. In spring they host the Flower and Food Festival! This park demonstrates Southern hospitality at it’s best. If you don’t mind getting a little wet, the water rides have no lines during the spring! If your a thrill seeker, our personal favorite was the exhilarating Wild Eagle rollercoaster. This year they open on March 11, 2023, but check ahead for their schedules, certain days are closed in the spring.

Horseback Riding

A unique way to experience the picturesque mountain area and see wildlife is on horseback. There are multiple stables that offer guided tours on vary lengths that will accommodate both novice and experienced riders. Most riding stables do require children to be 5 years of age. Two highly recommended stables are Smoky Mountain Riding Stables and Sugarland’s Riding Stables.

Anakeesta

Walk amongst the tree tops, soar through ziplines and take a gondola lift up to the highest overlooks at this outdoor adventure park. Anakeesta also has a one-of-a-kind nighttime experience called Astra Lumina, which is discribed as “an enchanted night walk among the stars.” Come experience the illuminated trails in this outdoor experience uses lighting, projection and sound for an astounding night entertainment so you can connect with the stars.

Gatlinburg Sky Lift

See the beauty of the area high up in the treetops on the Gatlinburg Sky Lift. Heralded as one of the most scenic ways to see the breathtaking views of the Great Smoky Mountains. The chairlift lifts you to the top of an 1,800-foot overlook with stunning views of the Smoky Mountains.

THINGS TO DO INDOORS

Tuckaleechee Caverns

So technically this activity is outdoors, but since it’s deep in a cavern you can enjoy it any type of weather. Journey deep into the Tuckaleechee Caverns to discover the mysteries of underground caves. A 1.5 hour guided walking tour takes you down into these amazing underground caverns. The cave system follows along the river on a lit paved path, as well as into enormous rooms with towering stalagmites. In the depths, we personally loved viewing the unique cave formations, drinking from the underground stream, viewing the waterfall, and having a lights out experience. Educational information is shared throughout your trip by knowledgeable tour guides. Discover the different formations including stalactites, stalagmites, flow bacon and even a 24-foot formation called the Dragon’s Toothpick.

Museums

When the weather is rainy, it’s the perfect opportunity to visit one of the many museums in nearby Pigeon Forge. Explore the Titanic Museum while you learn about the history of this famous ship or head to Wonderworks, which has hands-on exhibits on science, weather, and our world. Or check out the Hollywood Car Museum, which showcases famous vehicles from the movies.

Dinner Theater Shows

During your stay an entertaining option is to enjoy one of the dinner theater shows in Pigeon Forge. The Hatfields and Mccoys is a high action show that is based on the two feuding families. With all you can eat southern comfort food, your belly’s will be full as you watch the action-filled, comedy and musical show! For the pirate loving children, head to the Pirates Voyage or check out the Dolly Parton’s Stamped, which features a 4-course meal followed by a entertaining show featuring music, horses & pyrotechnics. Shows occur in the afternoons and evenings.

Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies

The aquarium features a transparent tunnel that showcases sharks, sea turtles and exotic fish swimming over your head. Another feature that my children loved is the Touch a Ray Bay, where you get a hands on experience touching stingrays and starfish. Another fun activity is Ripley’s Believe It or Not, which features wild and odd exhibits and interactive displays.

WHERE TO EAT

Peaceful Side Social and Brewery

Finding the perfect place to eat on vacation can be tricky. We found a gem during our trip. The Peaceful Side Social has a laidback social atmosphere and is a great place for families with kids and dogs. It features a large outdoor seating area with an outdoor playground. The restaurant has a variety of food from gourmet pizza including pear fig pizza, parmesan truffle fries, pretzels and beer cheese, and smoked salmon. They feature craft beer, ciders and various wines. Not to mention, they have rotating food trucks.

Enjoy the Island fountain show at Pigeon Forge, with a large number of rocking chairs that guests can sit in to relax while enjoying the show. Or view the show while eating at certain restaurants such as Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen. Kids will love seeing the water wheel that powers the mill by the Old Mill Restaurant in Pigeon Forge.

In Gatlinburg grab breakfast at the Pancake Pantry, with large portions and great service. You can’t go wrong with delicious pizza at Big Daddy’s Pizzeria!

6 DAY ITINERARY

Narrowing down where to stay, what to do,  and restaurants to eat at can be the hardest decisions with so many nearby options. Assuming you only have a week, honestly there is no way to experience everything. Here is 6 day sample itinerary while staying in the Great Smoky Mountains. This will obviously be tweaked for weather and dependent on where you stay in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge or Townsends. It’s a jam packed schedule. Personally, I’d plan to have some down days mixed in to relax at your hotel, house or rental.

Day 1 Visitor’s Center, Waterfall Hike/ Relax in Hot Tub

Day 2 Pigeon Forge Day Ripley’s Aquarium / Island Pigeon Forge, Shopping/ Dinner Theater Show

Day 3 Drive Caves Cove Scenic Loop, Hike Abram Falls, Tuckaleechee Caverns/ Social District for Food & outdoor playground

Day 4 Dollywood Amusement Park

Day 5 Anakeesta Outdoor Adventure Park & Astra Lumina Night Show

Day 6 Visit Gatlinburg / Clingmans Dome Hike, Horseback Ride or Sky lift/ Big Daddy’s Pizzeria
